Aortic dissection, aortic aneurysm - The aorta - Life after an aortic dissection

Nightmare on the Operating Table

Hi,

I mentioned i was having a Dacron tube fitted May 4th. Unfortunately two hours into the operation i developed a reaction to the antibiotics and the surgeon pulled the operation at the last minute. I awoke in intensive care and later developed severe neck strain, they say from lying awkwardly on the table & the tube inserted into my spine! I have spent a week in bed recovering unable to support my head & with headaches. Friday I went back to allergy tests & they pinpointed the antibiotic. Today I had to go back as my body reacted badly to the testing & they have put me on anti histamines & other medication.

I am trying to put a positive spin on it, but to be honest its been the worst fortnight of my life, even my first opp repairing the dissection was better than this.

Still I have no choice and am awaiting a new date. I am seeing my counsellor to try & make sense of it all.

Gosh if it could only be that simple!

I really try to believe everything in life happens for a reason. At times this has been very difficult. There is a reason things didn't work out, whatever that reason is, I bet it will be the reason you survive. It kind of like when there are two ways home and for some reason you take the path you normally don't take. You don't know why but there was a reason, maybe your avoided an accident or something equally as bad. Take this the same way, the reaction to the antibiotics and the delays, you will never know what tragedy you have avoided because of it.  I will keep you in my thoughts and please keep us updated.

Here I was feeling confident about finally making the decision to go ahead with my surgery and then ughhhhh ---- I read your update and I am sooooooooo sorry.  I don't understand why we have to go through so much after going through it already once before.  I realize there really isn't any answer.  Someone told me just to fill our heart with love to overtake the stress of it all.  Trying to replace the worry and frustration with only positive- but they admit that that is easier said then done.

My heart goes to you Harry.  I'm glad you made it through, but can't imagine the pain part of it -- well kind of -- and we've all been there and that just makes it worse --- like Really?  Again?  Come on?

Take care and keep us posted as I really really care!
