Aortic dissection, aortic aneurysm - The aorta - Life after an aortic dissection

On Tuesday this week, 28th September 2010, I had my first follow-up appointment since my operation. It was supposed to be 6 weeks after the operation but ended up being 17 weeks, due to the consultant having been on holiday, having to attend a conference or two and spending time on the lecture circuit. As it happened, I didn't get to see the consultant anyway. I had to settle for his registrar. (So why did I have to wait?)

Anyway, I got weighed and measured, had an x-ray and a ECG and had my blood pressure checked. Everything appeared to be OK except my blood pressure was too high for the registrar's liking. He upped my medication dosage (from 2.5mg of Bisoprolol to 3.75mg per day) and added an ACE inhibitor (Ramipril 1.75mg).

On Wednesday my local GP confirmed that my anaemia had gone away and my blood count was now back to normal.

I started on the new medication regime today. Took the tablets at 7.30am. Have been monitoring BP every hour since. Doesn't seem to have been any reduction over the previous levels.

I'll see what happens tomorrow...

Bisoprolol (Beta blocker) was increased to 5mg in late December.

Systolic BP is now in the 110 - 130 region.

Blood tests back in November showed that cholesterol levels and blood sugar are within normal bounds so no need for statins (thank goodness).

Saw the GP on Thursday. BP still at 142/82
Meds now set at:
Bisoprolol 3.75mg
Ramipril 5mg
Amlodipine 5mg

He also was concerned that he had no info on my cholesterol levels. Seems to think that getting me on Statins would be beneficial to me. Blood test arranged for next week.

Since my last post, I have been to see my GP. He increased the Ramipril to 2.5mg a day and told me to see the practice nurse 2 weeks later, which I did. BP was still high (150-160) so was instructed to double dosage to 5mg per day. Since then, BP has come down to 130-140. I am due to see GP again this week (Thursday) and expect dosage will be increased yet again. I have to say, that since I've been on 5mg per day, I have been sleeping much better - only waking up once during the night!

hey gregory (and/or wife),
looking ok for a start off. to give you an idea i was on 5mg ramipril at the start of my treatment (although after 6 months i was taken off it) and i am still on 2 lots of metoprolol (similar to bisprolol) totalling around 135mg per day. as long as you are feeling more comfortable in yourself the battle is pretty much won!
keep on trucking, as graeme would say!
take care,
r
