A few questions

David's recovery from the actual surgery is going well and he is now on an ordinary ward :-)

One thing he has is really bad indigestion which is distressing him. They are giving him omneprazole and gaviscon but it isn't having any effect. Is this a common problem? No one else on the ward seems to have it.

He is feeling quite down atm due to the fact that its just like he has had another stroke although they say its the effects of the old one come back not a new one.…

He is awake :-)

Thank you so much for your posts I don't think anyone else  really realises what a big deal this is. They replaced the whole of the aortic arch and the valve in the end although when he went in they had said they would leave the valve. We haven't spoken to Mr Bryan yet so don't know why. I am pleased they did it as hopefully everything will work ok now. The aorta was 10cm !

Much to our amazement they started to wake him up yesterday morning, by lunch time he was responding to…

Update from Davids family

So David has finally had the surgery and after 8 1/2 of the longest hours in my life has made it back to CICU :-)  Thats the good news, the bad news is we still have to wait until they wake him up to see if he is ok. They are not sure when they will attempt this it may be tomorrow or it may not.

One of the surgeons came and spoke to us and said " this as big as it gets in terms of surgery" tbh i wish he hadn't said that. To us he looks like death barely warmed up, to them he…

Final Countdown!

17 hours to go and counting!  I'm first on the list at 8:00am tomorrow.

They got some good images from my echo this morning so I hope they will be useful.

My aortic valve does leak a bit but I hope they will be able to repair it.  Not sure I like the idea of a ticking valve like yours, Graeme but I guess it's a lot better than nothing at all!

I don't really know a lot more, about what they are going to do, than I was told after I was first admitted.  I believe the tear…

My angiogram

Cheryl and Kimberlee - thanks for the heads-up. It's good to be pre-warned about these things then you can be better prepared. Hadn't thought about the car issue but I think I should be OK. Fortunately I drive a Land Rover Discovery so I think that fits the bill. My wife's BMW will be a definite no no!

Well, I got through my angiogram with good results. My coronary arteries appear to be in good shape. Shame the same thing can't be said about my aorta. It's massive!

Because it…

Thanks for your support

Thanks to you for your comments and support.  Its good to know you are out there.   I still feel quite detatched from all this but it's going to hit me soon.  My wife and family are the ones suffering most right now.  This is the second time in two years that they have had to watch me go through a major life threatening event.  First my stroke. now this.  They are the ones who most need support at times like this.

My angiogram is scheduled for early afternoon and hopefully that will…

The begining ....

I am currently (24 January 2011) suffering from Chronic Type A Aortic Dissection.

I have been suffering from breathlessness for some weeks and was eventually persuaded by my wife to visit our GP. He thought my problems could be caused by anaemia and arranged for some blood tests. He also arranged for a chest X-ray. The results showed no abnormalities.…
