4th Anniversary of my AAD

Today I celebrate 4 years of survival after suffering an Acute Aortic Dissection. It was only the quick action of my wife Eve, and the skills of the cardiac surgery team at Southampton General that saved my life.

Next week, we are heading for the South of Spain on my BMW R1200RT motorcycle after crossing by ferry from Poole in Southern England to Gijon in Northern Spain. We'll be back on June 29th.

Couple of updates........

Thanks for the comments about the meds. I'm now off the Diltiazem and feeling a bit more with it. I asked about the Diabetes risk associated with Bisoprolol / Indapamide combination and Consultant suggested a new modified release version of Indapamide which can be prescribed at a lower dose, so I'm happy with that.

Since my AD happeneded I've been thinking about support group meetings as a possible help, so I finally got round to writing to the Lead Clinician of the Vascular Team at St…

One year ago today!

Hello everyone!

I'm 64, married for over 30 years, no longer work (art gallery assistant) and no children. Oh, and we live in Cumbria in the north of England which is incredibly beautiful. That's me in a nutshell except I have Marfan syndrome, had a planned aortic valve & root replacement in 2007 and from a remark made by my surgeon at that time 'luckily' realised I was having a dissection on 19th March last year which no doubt speeded things up in A & E as far as diagnosis…

first CT scan results

A very great day in my life. At last I have recieved the results from the first yearly CT scan. I had the scan done on the 8th of Jan. and the pictures got lost for a while. At first I thought no news was good news, but I needed to hear it was all good. I still wake up at night and worry. The heart surgen called yesterday and said that all looks good on the pics from the scan. This is great information and really helps with the way I look at the future. I made it though one year healthy I…

One year ago today.

Today is the one year anniversary of possibly the worst day of my life a type A an b dissection and aortic aneurysm. By all accounts of the doctors and nurses who treated me I should be dead. This is how it went down.

It was a typical day for me in Hood River Oregon.  As usual I was up early to catch the fresh powder that had once again fallen on Mt Hood Meadows. I had moved from Alaska in November of the previous year so I could be around my family, ski some different areas…

Any medication tips?

Hi Folks,

Now that my vascular consultant has said my dissection is looking quite stable, I'm due a visit to my hypertension consultant and want to ask about different combinations and doses of medication.

The current mix (Adalat, Bisoprolol, Indapamide, Nifedipine and Ramipril) is doing a good job of keeping my blood pressure around 110/60 and heart rate below 55, but I feel extremely fatigued and spaced out most of the time.

I can see from other posts and web searches…

Thank you

I just wanted to thank all of the members for allowing me to join this site. It was nice to see that there were others in this world that has the same fears about living with a medical issue that could end your life at any moment. It has been less than a year since the accident. I call it this because I was skiing when this happened and I had to tell the  resort I had a skiing accident to redeem some of my season pass.  Anyways, there has not been a day that has gone by since my surgery that…

My Experience

I think I posted this in the wrong section before... sorry about that!

Hi all,

I really wish I found this site before, especially when I was going through my ordeal. A couple of things about me: My name is John and I'm in the second half of my 40's (the gray hairs speak for themselves!) I'm an American in the U.K. and, from what I see, have a lot in common with a lot of you all. I've had three aneurysms and two of them dissected. It was a rough road, but I'm…

No cardio allowed!

One of the many specialists that ran tests told me "for you, cardio exercise would be counter productive". I asked him to repeat his comment to my husband, which he did. My dissection was so extensive that getting my heart rate up could be deadly. I am wondering if anyone on this site has ever been told this?

My cardiologist has said regular walking or slow swimming would be OK, but even that would increase my heart rate. This fact scares me into being sedentary which isn't good for…

Another AD survivor

Hi all,

I've enjoyed reading the other stories on this site, often finding myself nodding along to peoples' observations on their own strengths and weaknesses, the joy of family and friends, and the wonders and limitations of the various elements of the National Health Service.

So, having recently joined it seemed about time to share my tale......

The 19th May 2012 looked like being a good day. I could see I was  getting fitter due to cycling 20 miles a day as I had just run…

My story

So pleased to find this site, I was beginning to think I was the only person this had happened to!

It all started on 15th March 2006, a day etched in my memory for ever I think. I had just had my 51st birthday and was very fit, weighed 7.5 stone and had never smoked and hardly drank. My husband was working away in Africa and I had spent the day completely as usual and had been for a ride on my horse that afternoon. I was just settling down to supper of pork chops ( It was…

My Story

Where to start... I had no warning or symptoms, and was swimming 2-3 miles a day up until my acute Type A dissection on November 5, 2012.  My sister and I were visiting our terminally ill mother in Chicago and were packing to fly home (she to Idaho, I to Philadelphia) when I felt a ripping sensation in my chest.  I had time to call out to her to "call 911," which she did, thank God (I'm glad we were on good terms!!!).  I remember thinking I should sit down, then lie down, and the next few…

My yearly ECHO/CT.

For the first time since I dissected 7 1/2 yrs ago I went a whole yr before a checkup. Kind of exciting when the docs feel you're stable enough to move from 6m to 1yr.  Well excitement is over.  I went for my checkup(this time an ECHO since they are safer than CT scans) doc called yesterday with results.  My leaky valve has gotten worse, and there is a possible expansion of the aorta, they are sending me for a CT scan to confirm the expansion. Doc called in the referral yesterday, so…

Yet another event

Hi I have had an

Other event in my life. 2 weeks ago in the early hours of the 1st August 2013 I had a seizure and was rushed to hospital. During the seizure I dislocated my shoulder. It took a week for the hospital to put it back in place as they had to take me off my blood thinning medicine just in case the had to open me up while they were resetting my shoulder. Luky they didn't need to open me up and reset the shoulder under anaesthesia.

I now have a sling on for 6 weeks with a… Continue

Long time ago

It has being a long time since I was here. I had a turbulent period on my job and the stress factor was very high. But me and my team stand ground and solved the situation. It's much better now. The price I have to pay,was an increased blood pressure.

Anyway. I haven't forgot this excellent site. I celebrated my first re-birth anniversary at May 11:th. I ran two 6 hours race. One in March and I missed he marathon distance with 206 meters! Arrgh! But I got my revenge in the beginning…
