Aortic dissection, aortic aneurysm - The aorta - Life after an aortic dissection
Well definitely no sugar coating. I need a graft in the ascending aorta and the first part of the arch, it can be done in one procedure but the valve will have to come out and a new one put in. Estimated 10% mortality rate, 5% stroke risk + 2% infection risk + risk of post op bleeding and return to theatre. This information swiftly followed by what to do in the event of a searing pain in my back! I think the worse news was that it can happen again further along the aorta, dear God I cant do this every 5 years!
I had the carotid doppler studies done today and I'm waiting for an appt for an angiogram (I'm just praying that I dont need bypass surgery as well).
Once the workup has been done I'll be put on the list estimate 8 weeks from then.
It all feels very unreal I dont know what I'm more scared of dissecting while I'm waiting for surgery or having the surgery, I'm guessing you'll all say dissecting!
Anyway sod all the statistics, I'm 100% alive today and thats all that anyone has.
