Aortic dissection, aortic aneurysm - The aorta - Life after an aortic dissection

Yes it's 6 years since I suffered an acute aortic dissection. I'm still here and going strong. Recovery has been slow but steady and apart from the occasional dizzy spell, I'm doing fine. I go for long walks every day and ride my motorbike whenever the weather is good enough. In a couple of months I'll be 70! My son asked me what I wanted and I said, "another 10 years". Here's hoping.

Graeme, the dizzy spells can occur at any time with me. At least once a month, sometimes more frequently, sometimes less. Usually occur in bright light or when there's a lot of noise/chatter around. Changing from Simvastatin to Atorvastatin seems to have helped a bit, and wearing dark glasses when it's bright. So far, my bike riding has not been adversely affected. I have recently bought a new BMW R1200RT and spent the August bank holiday riding in wales followed by a 2 week trip to the Dordogne in France.

Hi Greg I am 6 years 3 months since my dissection and my recovery has been slow and lack of physio after a month in ICU has not helped with mobility and now need double knee replacement.  I do feel loads better now  though and blood pressure is controlled so we do get there eventually.  My consultant decided this year to leave it 2 years till next visit as my aorta is stable now.  I am so chuffed with this.    My whole outlook on life has changed since my dissection and now I live each day with enthusiasm and my outlook is always optimistic.  Another 10 years would be great.     Best wishes to you allx

Greg, how often are your dizzy spells? Mine seem to be getting more frequent lately, about once every 2 months or so instead of 6 monthly or so. Does it affect your bike riding ability? My 13th anniversary was in April..here's to a darn sight more!

cheers
