Didn't see this coming

Approximately three weeks ago today I was having dinner with my wife when I felt this horrible feeling of indigestion. It quickly subsided and I then felt flush and feverish. We went home and I had a temperature of 101. I went to bed and checked my temp in the morning. My fever subsided, but I still had a shortness of breath and slight chest pain. I continue my life as normal thinking I had a slight case of the flu or a chest cold. I took some Mucinex and Ibuprofen, but the symtoms didn't… Continue

Hi there everyone!!! Survivors!

I am a survivor of 10yrs in April this yr...I live on my own surrounded by people that dont understand that you nearly wasnt there not so long ago. You are left to build yourself up without the support of the NHS, but saying that I have become stronger as result. Its scarry sometimes when your body complains n you know where that pain is coming from.

I had an acute dissection in April 99. They of course wrongly diagnosed me as having a chest infection n gave me antibiotics. Next day no… Continue

My wife's tragic death

I am about to describe a series of events which result in a tragic misdiagnosis of my wife’s condition, resulting in her death.

On the evening of Tuesday February 13th 2007 my wife collapsed on the stairs with a severe pain in one of her legs. At the time she was talking to her friend on the telephone whilst sitting on the stairs.

I heard her moans from the kitchen and found her in extreme agony, deathly white and sweating profusely.

I helped her to the living… Continue

My story

THE BEGINNING OF THE TRUTH

My experience began on August 16, 2009. Although I have been feeling "the elephant seating on the chest syndrome" on and off for the last five years, different tests were done and the diagnosis have been: Acid Reflex or Stress. Additionally, the doctors, hospital personnel, and even family members were raising their eye brows. Needless to say I was skeptical to even talk about it.

August 16, 6 AM, it was time to go running since I have been… Continue

Living with a mechanical heart valve.. Whoosh Whoosh, Thump Thump, Tick Tick!

OK. Life was not meant to be easy - so they say! The first thing I noticed with my new heart valve (My aortic valve was also shredded during my aortic dissection and had to be replaced

(see my earlier blog) after things calmed down and I went home from hospital was the 'whooshing' and 'thump thump thump'/'click click click' noises coming from inside me..

As time… Continue

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: Source: The British Heart Foundation: Jan08

The following are two excerpts from the British Heart Foundation Factfile on AAA (Abdominal Aortic Aneursyms). Sobering reading especially in that both abdominal aortic aneurysms and ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms continues to grow ever year.

Introduction

The “normal” diameter of the abdominal aorta is approximately 2cm, a dimension that increases with age. An abdominal aneurysm is defined by an… Continue

My Story..22 April 2003 - No - it was NOT just bad indigestion...!!

I'm an Aortic Dissection survivor! We had moved to the UK from Australia in January 2002 after selling our online travel business in Australia in late 2001 after the effects of the Ansett Airlines failure and the devastating effects of 9/11 on the global travel industy. With the love of my life, my lovely British wife Nikki we had obtained new venture financing in mid 2002 and were deep in building our new online venture throughout late 2002 and 2003.…

Media beat-up: Comparison between proposed new US medical system & NHS: Week ending August 15 2009

I CANNOT let the current "media frenzy " over the stupid, boorish, ill informed remark from Tory MEP Daniel Hannan, a recognised critic of the NHS go by unchallenged.

I refer to his interview this week on American television regarding the difference between the NHS and the newly planned (and extremely controversial) American health system in which he (Hannan) said that he… Continue

"Carpe diem quam minimum credula postero" ( "Seize the day and place no trust in tomorrow!")

I'm an Aortic Dissection survivor! The creation of this Network and Forum is something that has been high on my own personal "Bucket List" after suffering an "Type A acute aortic dissection" in 2003, and surviving a 10 hour operation to replace my ascending and…

How I gave up smoking...

This is copied (without comments) from the forum section.

Hey there,

My name is Richard and am 32 years old. I live and work in Karlsruhe, Germany, but I am originally British. I would like to share the story of my dissection with you. I apologise for the length... I seem to have an attack of digital diarrhoea...

On the 8th of July 2008 at around about 10 o'clock in the morning I had a type I (ascending and descending) aortic dissection. I had just been up to the 6th…
