Aortic dissection, aortic aneurysm - The aorta - Life after an aortic dissection
Having finally got my blood pressure down to a reasonable level (well, the level that my cardiologist recommended) I now find that I have limited blood circulation in my left leg. This is giving rise to a condition known as 'intermittent claudication' whereby I cannot walk more than a few yards before the muscles in my leg start aching unbearably. After a few minutes rest, the pain subsides and then I can continue for a few more yards. I'm wondering if there has been a problem for some time which did not become apparent whilst my blood pressure was high. Could it be that the higher blood pressure was able to overcome the restriction which is now causing me so much agony? My GP has referred me to the hospital for further investigation. I hope it won't be too long before they can see me.

Hi there Gregory,
my husband had an Aortic Dissection on August 1st, last year. He has recently gone back to work. His BP is usually around 110/120 - sometimes lower - and he is slowly but surely having less aches and pains.(He had a 61/2 inch descending dissection, with no surgery). He too has difficulty walking very far. He too has pain i his left hip/thigh area. He rests for a second or two then he carries on, but even so he is restricted to just how far he can walk. This, more than anything, really does get him down. The Consultant does not think it is related to his dissection.Neither does our Doctor, although he freely admits he has never dealt with any one with a dissection before. If you find out what causing this Gregory, please would you pass the conclusions to me so I can talk it over with my David? He tries to be cheerful, and I do to but both of us are scared really.x
I saw the consultant at Southampton General, today. He agrees that it is 'claudication', which is a restriction of the blood supply to the left leg, and believes it may be connected to the type A aortic dissection that I suffered 20 months ago . I will be getting an appointment in the next week or so for a CT scan of both the chest and leg to determine the cause of the problem. I'll keep you posted.
